Experts Dig in with Doggies for Dementia with Special Guest, Jennifer Prescott
Real Life of a Family and Professional Caregiver
Today’s guest is Jennifer Prescott, a professional caregiver, advanced practice nurse, family caregiver, wife, mother and business owner. She is also a community leader, and works with families in much the same situation as her own. I find this remarkable!
Jennifer Prescott is the founder of Blue Water Homecare and a Registered Nurse. She has a master’s in nursing and after years of direct patient care, she is now a business owner caring for those in need of homecare. She is responsible for the strategic direction, vision and growth of the fastest growing independent home care agency in Central Texas. Perhaps equally as impressive, she is known for compassionate care for the elderly, and is a Certified Dementia Practitioner based in Austin, Texas.
We believe you’ll enjoy this episode for the important information but even more for the humility and honestly.
These are not uncommon in our conversations on Experts Dig in with Doggies for Dementia, however there is nothing quite so eye opening as hearing an “expert” in the field of dementia talk about the challenges with a loved one of their own, and in her own home.
Nurses are creative problem solvers with an inner knowing that any challenge can be solved. Many of us tend to be over-achievers. If we weren’t this way before university nursing schools, then we most certainly were by the time we walked the stage for our diploma. It’s rough, rigorous and often with little regard for self care. I’m happy to say this is changing since self care has become quite the buzz, but it was not during my forty years of practice.
How does Jennifer manage her business, keep her dream alive, raise happy healthy children and be present for a loved one?
As many nurses find, when we become parents or a caregiver for an adult loved one, the training and experience can exit stage right. At the core of it, we are people experiencing joy and heartbreak. We experience boundless energy and exhaustive overwhelm. We are great friends and listeners, and yet need and crave to be heard. We don’t want to whine, but dang, we need to vent sometimes. We want to feel like we can juggle it all, and know inside this is impossible without help. Jennifer Prescott’s business is all about supporting families and individuals at home so they can remain at home for as long as possible.
