We’ve been featured on NBC and ABC! We celebrated Carol’s 90th birthday by giving her what she always wanted- a chance to be a movie star.

I’ve spoken at many conferences, and typically a few people cry. They cry hard. At first, I assumed my slides or stories were too close to their hearts, but I was wrong. Invariably, they approached me following the presentation. They were crying with regret over NOT getting photos before their loved one died. They tell me they never thought of it or they didn’t know who could do this or someone else in their family thought it would be in poor taste. When they see the compassionate way the photos are taken, the emotions run high. They’ve become strong supporters of Doggies for Dementia so others do not have to feel the pain they did. We all learn from their stories.

Friends, families, and even strangers literally take steps backward when they tell people their loved one has dementia. We are afraid of what we don’t know about. Doggies for Dementia Foundation wants to put an end to this fear and resulting pain.

Family Caregivers

Family caregivers care for their loved one at home. It is not uncommon for there to be ONE person taking on this challenging role. They often leave a job and alter their lives significantly to do the 24/7 job of caring for and loving someone with dementia. They are experiencing even more isolation and loneliness than before. It is often difficult to take their loved ones with dementia out to run errands, and now it is not safe. People with dementia may not understand the importance of wearing a mask, may forget and it might also lead to the agitation many of us experience. When we do a photo session at someone’s home or in a LTC community, we learn about the families and share those stories of challenges, pain, triumph, joy, and love. The session, images, and stories become part of their legacy and something to cherish for generations. The session, images and video are gifted. We rely on donations and sponsorships.

Long Term Care

As you’ve probably heard, families are often not allowed to see their loved ones in long-term care (LTC) and if they are permitted in, they must keep a distance, wear a mask and not have any physical contact. You read it correctly-no hugs, no hand-holding, and no physical touch. I can’t imagine not seeing my mother, sister, aunt and even grown child for 8 months and then not be able to hug. That’s what is done to keep those in long term care safe. Clearly, what scientists thought was a good idea has turned out to be very harmful and this is being reconsidered thanks to the voices of families and professional caregivers.
